Turn your Facebook Group fans into Facebook Page fans

If you are like me, you found it much easier to grow a facebook group than a facebook page since you cannot send out “join” requests for a page and until recently we were not able to even see a page without logging on.  Groups however were easier to grow and a bit more viral in the features available. (Credit to my assistant, Karina, who discovered this recently for me.)

A request to Facebook and 24 hours is all that is needed to turn your group fans into page fans and maybe grow your page from:

in 24 hours!!!

Here is all that is required:

  1. Visit the Facebook Help Form Page.
  2. Subject line should read: Convert Group to Page
  3. Make sure you include the url for both the group and the page in the body of the request.
  4. Watch your page fans grow!!

We doubled are fans with this new feature.

  1. Congrats on growing a “fat cat” Facebook group. We’re still cautious about how we approach Facebook and will be talking with some summer camp students about it in the coming weeks. Do you have any concerns about encroaching on students’ “sacred space” or is that no longer an issue now that everyone can get into Facebook?

  2. Facebook is an experiment for us right now. We do not have a goal except to create a group of supporters and grow that group. We are very cautious in terms of not spamming our fans. We post interesting stories about FIU but we have not reached out with notifications, etc. For now it is yet another communication channel for us. (One example of a way we are going to use it is to ask fans to create FIU desktop wallpaper, the winners will be posted as downloads on our site.)

    For now we just wanted the university to have a presence. I work on many traditional marketing and communication tactics which audiences can opt out of but it is nice to have a group of people who actually want to hear from us and have come to us on their own.

  3. Just a tip… the fastest way to grow your Facebook Page is to use MySpace… higher ed seems to have no idea about the “Schools” function on MySpace… best kept secret out there!
