The Intro Post
This site was started to help others learn and in turn learn myself through the sharing of marketing ideas, projects, incites and the latest tools available to marketers. My name is Eduardo Merille, I am a marketing professional working for Florida International University, one of the nation’s largest urban public universities, located in Miami, FL.
My posts will lean heavily toward new technology and new media however not at the exclusion of traditional advertising and direct marketing activity. Most people I speak to about marketing seem to only think of the promotion or the creative so I think it’s important that my first post define marketing.
Simply put, marketing is winning customer preference. Everything that goes into that decision of having the customer choose your widget or service over any other is marketing. That means the news article they read, the ad they saw, the blog they read, the commercial on tv, the price they thought was reasonable, the mail/email they got, the way they were greeted, the appearance or atmosphere of the location they visited, ALL OF THIS and even more can be considered part of marketing.
If you are new to marketing and want to read a more formal explanation visit this page.
Great marketing is measurable and goal driven. That said, I have seen plenty of examples of “shooting from the hip” that have yielded some measure of success.
I decided to start this blog while attending a conference on Higher Education E- Marketing, held in San Diego, California by Stamats. In my experience they are one of the most knowledgeable organizations in the realm of higher ed marketing. They hold regular web seminars and annual conferences on marketing. In fact, we hired them to conduct marketing research recently which I will post about later.
I also figured today would be a great time to start as I am attending another conference in San Diego on Communications, Marketing, and Technology. CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) is hosting this one. I will be posting notes and attaching presentations as allowed by the presenters.
Although much of my work is specific to higher ed marketing, the concepts and ideas are transferable to many other industries and I am not opposed to discussing any and all marketing related topics. We are here to learn.
Eduardo,
I followed Andrew’s twit over to your blog. Welcome to blogging and welcome to the online conversation about Higher Education marketing online. Best of luck!
